9 new original Artworks and experimenting with a new medium: Lithography on Limestone
We are pleased to announce that SHUN SUDO will hold a solo exhibition “Blowin’ in the Wind” at Elephant Studio (WATOWA GALLERY) in Tokyo from Saturday, July 9, 2022.
In addition to 9 new original Artworks, SHUN SUDO will showcase his first lithograph work, hand in hand with Masashi Ozaki a printer and Lithography craftsman.
While Lithographs are usually made on metal plates, both have decided to make lithographs on Limestone in light of Ozaki’s incredible craftsmanship abilities and his wish to be the artist’s tool.
Lithography was a technique used in Picasso’s most representative artworks and his lithographs were known to be experimented in ways the medium had never seen before.

SHUN SUDOの本個展が開催される時期は、2022年初頭から開始されたロシアによるウクライナ侵攻が継続されている最中にあたる。SUDO自身は、本展との関わりにおいて、 ボブ・ディランの代表曲「風に吹かれて(Blowin’ in the Wind)」(1963)に不思議なシンパシーを感じると述べている。そのディランの「風に吹かれて」は、黒人の権利を求めて闘争した当時のアメリカ公民権運動を支持するために作られたと言われているが、世界一有名な反戦歌のひとつとして知られる。当然ながら、本展におけるSUDOの制作も、そうした混乱を極める時代の状況から不可避的に影響を被っている。彼が感じるシンパシーも、そうした共通点からやってくるものかもしれない。しかし、数ある「反戦歌」のなかでもSUDOがこの曲に特に共感を覚える理由は、その独特のスタンスにあると考えられる。

「答えは風に吹かれている(The answer is browin’ in the wind)」という歌詞に象徴され るように、この曲は反戦という強い意志に裏打ちされていながらも、決して絶対的な「答え」を聴く者に押し付けてこない。SUDOの作品も同様に、政治的批評性に立脚しつつも、一方的なメッセージとして響くことはない。今回の展示でのメイン・ピースには、彼のシグニチャーである「ボタンフラワー」と一緒に「鳩」が描かれている。平和の象徴として頻繁に使用される「花」や「鳩」というモチーフを用いた表現は、かなり直接的なメタファーであると言えるが、それを自分なりにアレンジしたそうした率直な選択からは、むしろ作家の切迫した感情が伝わってくるようにも思われる。加えて、「ボタンフラワー」が収められている「花瓶」をよく見てみると、最前線で戦闘を行う兵士のヘルメットを逆さにしたようなギミックをしていることに気づく。そのほかにも、薬莢やバズーカ など殺戮の道具として製造された様々な兵器が、SUDOの巧みなアレンジとアプロプリエーションを通して本来の「用途」を失い、アートにおける新しいモチーフとして再生している。

一見すると「ポップ・アート」の系譜に位置づけられるようにも感じられるSHUN SUDOの作品群は、しかし、「ポップ・アート」の作品の多くでは明示的に示されていなかった政治性を備えていると言える。そこには、彼の特性とも言える、文化的系譜のなかに現代 的な要素を織り込む技術が活かされている。加えて、SUDOの作品の特徴である力強い輪 郭線の原風景であるマンガや、海外から輸入されたスケートボードのデッキに描かれた個性的なイラストレーションなどのポップ・カルチャーも彼の芸術実践の核を形成してきた。政治的混迷が日に日に度合いを深める世界において、「アートに何ができるのか」という問いがますます重みを増しつつある。本展におけるSHUN SUDOの芸術実践は、その問いにどのように応答しようとしているのか。自身の目で確かめてみてほしい。

The timing of this solo exhibition coincides with the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine that began early 2022.
Among all the anti war songs Shun sudo feels that Bob Dylan’s “Blowing in the wind” (1963), one of the most popular anti-war songs, is the most relatable one for him. The song has been said to have been written in support of the black American civil rights movement of that time and raises a rhetorical question about peace, war and freedom. The singer believed that while all the answers were present no one dares to find them.

Although the song carries a strong anti-war message, it never forces an "answer" on its audience, similarly we can see this pattern in shun sudo’s work. "Flowers" and "doves," which are the main pieces of this exhibition, are subjects frequently used as symbols of peace, which is a rather direct metaphor, and, if you look closely at the "vase" containing the "button flower," you will notice that it can also look like an upside-down helmet of a soldier. Various other weapons meant for killing, such as shell casings and bazookas, seem to have lost their original destruction purpose and have been reborn into something new, with the artist’s re-appropriation,
